In investment banking, you'll be doing a lot of comparable companies analysis.
Being able to pick comparable companies is an art more than a science, and you'll get better with practice.
A practical way to start pulling comparables would be to find one public comparable and look for competitors listed in it's 10K.
Comparable companies should be similar to the company in question in terms of industry, size and geography.
How specific these criteria are often depends on how many comparables are available.
You need at least a few companies to get decent results. The more companies that are available, the more narrow your criteria can be.
