When most people think about finance, the images that come to mind are usually those from the capital markets -- the New York Stock Exchange, stock charts, tickers, etc.

We will broadly define the topic of capital markets to include any place one might go to raise or invest money.

The stock market may be the broadest concept in this category, but foreign exchange (investing in foreign currencies), derivatives markets and certain private markets also fall under this topic.

When we talk about finance being an ocean, the capital markets are a large sea in that ocean because of the volume of financial transactions that occur on a daily basis.
