A depository is a clearing agency that is registered with the SEC to provide immobilization, safekeeping and book-entry settlement services.

The four main depositories are the Depository Trust Company (DTC) in New York, the Midwest Securities Trust Company in Chicago, the Pacific Securities Depository Trust Company in San Francisco and the Philadelphia Depository Trust Company in Philadelphia.
