A discretionary account is an account where an investor authorizes a registered representative in writing to use his or her judgment in buying and selling securities.

A discretionary account can have certain limits to the amount of discretion that the registered representative has.

In a discretionary account, the representative can make decisions on the selection, timing, amount and price of securities that he or she manages for the investor.
